One Million Tree Project

In 2023, Women in GIS (WiGIS) Uganda initiated a one-million-tree project initiative in commemoration of Earth Day. The project is aimed at restoring and preserving the environment by planting one million trees in strategic locations through its members, partners, and associates by 2027. The project envisions a greener and healthier planet, contributing to biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation, and sustainable development. Earth Day is an annual worldwide event that acknowledges the beauty of Mother Earth and what can be done to preserve it.  April 22nd was designated as International Mother Earth Day through a resolution adopted in 2009 by the General Assembly.

Objectives

Our One Million Tree Project aims to achieve several key objectives: restoring and enhancing ecosystems to combat deforestation and promote environmental health; mitigating climate change by sequestering carbon, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and lowering our carbon footprint; conserving biodiversity by creating habitats for diverse species and supporting endangered plants and animals; and engaging local communities in tree planting activities to foster a sense of environmental stewardship and collective responsibility for a healthier planet.

Activities

  1. Community tree planting and mapping in different parts of the country
  2. GIS Education for Climate Action
  3. Support to community-led climate actions
  4. Community climate action exchange fields
